My first introduction to good food was through my best friend Alix Sebastian. I was diagnosed with a chronic illness many years ago and truly lost all hope for a future in myself. I had my heart set on being an underwater welder at the time, and this diagnosis devastated me. Through the meals and countless hospital visits, she healed me from the inside out. She would make Classic Costa Rican and Peruvian dishes for me (with the help of her mother) every time I would spend nights with her growing up. Today green spaghetti, gallo pinto and Arroz con pollo are the taste of home to me. I never forget her unwavering support and belief in my ability to gain my mobility and continue on to live a pain free life. I am the woman I am today because of her.

I was first introduced to cooking for myself when my close friend Ayden decided to start taking his ramen cooking seriously. He started selling specialty bowls in eighth grade and it was a huge hit. Watching him light up as I sat and watched him create masterpieces from what seemed to me like simple ingredients on their own was truly magical. I thought to myself, maybe I could do this for our friends to help with the cost of going out to restaurants two to three times a week.

Before you knew it, our friend group started cooking together much more often. Even if it was a simple spaghetti and meatballs, we always had a blast creating irreplaceable memories together. One specific night I remember we made carbonara. Something Ayden took the lead on, but quickly became a frequented favorite within our circle.

I grew up in New Jersey, so of course the Jersey Shore was frequented every year. More recently I have been put in charge of all bookings, and full meal prep for the week on our friend group’s travels. From a breakfast of pancakes, frittatas and cinnamon rolls to packed lunches, to easy pot pie recipes for dinner, I pride myself in my coordinating ability. My love for bringing all of my friends together can be boiled down to my real passion for cooking. I have been beyond blessed with an overwhelming amount of support from all of my friends as I hone my skills in culinary school.
